When will Starlink launch in India? The approvals still pending, and the price question

Elon Musk blames 'oligarchs'. The government says all three satellite-internet licensees are at the same stage. Here's what Starlink has, what it still needs, and why the ₹8,600 price you keep seeing isn't real.

TL;DRThe short version

  • There's no launch date. On 8 October, the Ministry of Communications said security assessments are underway for all three licensees (Starlink, Jio Satellite and Eutelsat OneWeb), and none has been cleared.
  • Two big steps are pending: security compliance, then spectrum assignment. The spectrum pricing rule (5% of AGR) was approved by DoT's top body but still needs Union Cabinet approval, per Mint.
  • ₹8,600 a month is not Starlink's India price. Starlink said it was dummy test data shown by a 'config glitch' in December 2025. No India price has been announced.
  • Track every approval, step by step, for all three companies: kyuntrend.in/tools/satcom-launch-trackerEach step has its own source and date. We update it when the government announces a clearance.

Starlink's ground setup
20 gateway sites built in India (Starlink VP Lauren Dreyer, 7 Oct)

Starlink searches in India jumped this week, but it wasn't because of a launch. On 7 October, Elon Musk posted that Starlink was "being blocked by certain oligarchs in order to maintain their monopolistic chokehold on the Indian people". A day later, he asked, "Is Ambani the real boss of India". The government replied the same day. So what's actually holding Starlink up, and when can you buy it?

Short answer: no date yet

There's no official launch date. In its 8 October statement, the Ministry of Communications said it hasn't cleared any applicant to launch satellite communication services. The statement continued: "Security assessment as part of this process is currently underway in respect of all the three licensees. As and when this process is completed for a licensed entity, it may proceed to the next step of seeking assignment of spectrum. At present, all the three entities are at broadly the same regulatory stage."

The three licensees are Starlink, Jio Satellite Communications (a Jio Platforms subsidiary) and Eutelsat OneWeb, which is backed by Bharti. Sunil Bharti Mittal said his venture is also still waiting for approvals, according to The Indian Express.

What Starlink already has

  • A GMPCS licence from DoT (June 2025). OneWeb got its licence in April 2022 and Jio Satellite in October 2022, per Mint.
  • IN-SPACe authorisation for its Gen1 constellation, dated 8 July 2025 and valid until 7 July 2030 (TOI).
  • Ground infrastructure. On 7 October, Starlink's Lauren Dreyer said the company has built 20 gateway sites in India and keeps Indian user data in India.

What's still pending

  1. Security compliance. This is the main hold-up. Minister of State Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani said the Ministry of Home Affairs is looking into the security issues, and the assessment is underway for all three companies. The Indian Express reports that the concern is whether foreign operators could bypass Indian gateways. In August, Mint reported that law enforcement agencies had told the PMO permission shouldn't be granted unless India has control over these systems.
  2. Spectrum pricing. DoT's Digital Communications Commission approved a spectrum charge of 5% of adjusted gross revenue, with 1 percentage point off for notified hard-to-reach areas, according to officials Mint spoke to. Mint says this still needs Union Cabinet approval. Operators would also pay an 8% licence fee.
  3. Spectrum assignment. This comes only after a company passes its security assessment. Spectrum will be assigned administratively for five years, extendable by two, not auctioned (Mint).

The ₹8,600 price: not real

You'll still see "Starlink India price ₹8,600 per month" in posts and videos. It isn't an official price. On 8 December 2025, Starlink's India website briefly showed a ₹8,600 monthly residential plan and a ₹34,000 one-time hardware cost. Starlink VP Lauren Dreyer then said on X: "There was a config glitch that briefly made dummy test data visible, but those numbers do not reflect what the cost of Starlink service will be in India." She added that "service pricing for customers in India has not yet been announced, and we are not taking orders" (The Economic Times, NDTV).

Nothing has changed since: Starlink hasn't announced an India price, and Jio Satellite and OneWeb haven't either. The Indian Express calls the ₹8,600 figure "a temporary placeholder price".

Be careful: if a website or "dealer" takes bookings or deposits for Starlink in India, Starlink's own statement says it isn't taking orders here.

Why it matters, and what to watch

Musk argues Starlink would bring affordable internet to areas with "bad or no internet". The ministry says the framework is "fair and non-discriminatory" and calls the claim of unfair treatment "baseless and misconceived". Mint notes that the delay comes as Jio plans its own constellation of about 1,600 satellites.

What to watch: a security clearance for any of the three companies, then a Cabinet decision on spectrum pricing. Until both happen, nobody can sell satellite broadband to Indian homes. We'll update the tracker when either happens.
