Udta Teer (उड़ता तीर) is worth seeing in a theatre only if you love Ayushmann Khurrana's concept comedies and don't mind patchy writing. Everyone else can wait for OTT. The Ayushmann Khurrana–Sara Ali Khan spy comedy opened in theatres today, 23 October 2026. Critics are split. Webdunia gives it 1.5/5, and at least one Hindi outlet gives it 4/5. Early box office numbers point to a modest opening, with Koimoi predicting ₹3.5–4.5 crore net on Day 1.
Three things are driving searches for "उड़ता तीर" today: it's release day, the first reviews are out, and Nepal has refused to let the film be shown. Below you'll find the critic round-up, the box office numbers (and how each one was counted), the Nepal ban, the Mukul Dev tribute, the OTT status and a plain verdict.

Udta Teer story: what is the film about?
Ayushmann plays Bilal Ahmad, a Pakistani spy planted in India under the name "Vikrant". As Vikrant he marries Yamini (Sara Ali Khan) and gets a job at CTI, an Indian counter-terror unit, while still reporting to Pakistan.
Then an accident wipes his memory. He wakes up believing he really is a patriotic Indian officer and starts hunting Pakistani spies, the same network that sent him. Most of the comedy and the twists come from that identity mix-up.
Is it a true story? No, the plot is fiction. One character does point to a real person: Mukul Dev's Azhar Maqsood is based on the terrorist Masood Azhar.
Cast and characters
- Ayushmann Khurrana as Bilal / Vikrant
- Sara Ali Khan as Yamini
- Mukul Dev as Azhar Maqsood
- Gulshan Grover as General Mir
- Ram Kapoor as A.Q. Niyazi
- Rahul Bose as M.D. Burman
- Also starring Brijendra Kala, Suhail Nayyar, Supriya Pilgaonkar, Raghubir Yadav and Smita Tambe
Udta Teer review round-up: what critics are saying
The reviews are clearly mixed, with no consensus either way.
The negative case: Webdunia, 1.5/5
Webdunia's Hindi review likes the premise but says the film wastes it. Its main complaints:
- A weak script that doesn't make the most of the memory-loss idea
- Jokes that don't land
- Rushed direction
- A thin role for Sara Ali Khan
- Forgettable songs
Even this harsh review praises the supporting cast. Mukul Dev, Ram Kapoor, Gulshan Grover and Suhail Nayyar are all named for good work.
The positive case: OneIndia, News24, Dainik Savera Times
Several other Hindi outlets liked it a lot more. Dainik Savera Times calls it an "explosive mix" of patriotism, comedy and twists, and one of the positive reviews gives it 4/5. These reviews like the film's tone, a patriotic story told for laughs, and the twists in the second half.
How to read the split
The two sides mostly agree on the strengths: the idea and the supporting actors. They disagree on whether the jokes and the script deliver. If you already enjoy Ayushmann's high-concept films, you'll probably side with the positive reviews. If writing matters most to you, the Webdunia review is the better guide.
Public reaction: what audiences are saying on X
Today is the first day of shows, so audience reaction is still building. We won't treat a handful of early posts as a verdict. First-day posts on X usually come from fans and preview audiences, and they skew positive for any big-star release.
The question that matters for Udta Teer is word of mouth. Koimoi, the trade site, says outright that word of mouth will decide how the film does after its opening. What to watch for on X over the next 48 hours:
- Do the twists get people talking? Positive reviews lean heavily on them. If viewers are tagging posts "no spoilers" and urging friends to go, that's a good sign.
- Do people find it funny? Webdunia's biggest complaint was jokes that don't land. Comedies live or die on laughter, so watch whether audiences quote lines or complain that it's boring.
- Do people mention Mukul Dev? Expect emotional posts about his performance, given that the role is posthumous (more below).
We'll update this section once there's enough audience response to judge fairly.
Udta Teer box office collection Day 1
Actual Day 1 figures aren't out yet. Trade sites usually publish early estimates the next morning. Here's where pre-sales stood. Each figure was counted differently, so note the basis before comparing them.
| Source | Figure | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Koimoi (final pre-sales) | 41,750 tickets; ~₹1.12 cr gross / ~₹95 lakh net | Excludes blocked seats; 6,678 shows; average ticket price ~₹240 |
| Sacnilk | ~₹2.2–2.6 cr | Includes blocked seats |
| Koimoi (Day 1 prediction) | ₹3.5–4.5 cr net | Projection including walk-in sales |
India.com reported more than 1 lakh tickets sold. That figure was counted on a different basis from Koimoi's 41,750, so the two can't be compared directly.
Is Udta Teer a hit or a flop?
It's far too early to say. Koimoi notes that if the film reaches about ₹4.38 crore net or more on Day 1, it would be Ayushmann's third-biggest opening since COVID. Only Thamma (₹25.11 cr) and Dream Girl 2 (₹10.69 cr) opened bigger.
The film also faces heavy competition. Koimoi says more than half a dozen Hindi films open today, while holdovers such as Drishyam 3 are still in cinemas. If you're deciding between them, our explainer on Drishyam 3's Hindi and Malayalam versions covers the other big title in theatres. Why did Nepal ban Udta Teer?
On 16 October 2026, Nepal's Central Film Censor Board refused permission to screen Udta Teer. The ministry passed the decision to the film's Nepal distributor, National Cine Group Nepal.
- The reported reason: The India–Pakistan storyline. Reports point to concerns about Nepal's "diplomatic relations with Pakistan".
- What the letter didn't say: The official letter didn't name any scenes.
- The legal basis: Reports cite Section 8(3) of a film act but disagree on which act.
- Where it applies: Only in Nepal. The release in India and other markets, including the UK, is unaffected.
Mukul Dev's posthumous role
Mukul Dev, who plays Azhar Maqsood, died on 23 May 2025 at the age of 54. Wikipedia describes Udta Teer as his second posthumous appearance. Ayushmann Khurrana paid tribute to him at the trailer launch.
Is it his last film? We can't confirm that. Udta Teer is his second posthumous release, and we haven't seen a confirmed list of any unreleased work. Critics on both sides praised his performance, including Webdunia, which otherwise panned the film.
Udta Teer songs
The album came out on 16 October 2026 on Sony Music India:
- "Choozay" (with Emiway Bantai)
- "Chann" (Arijit Singh)
- "Udta Teer" title track
- "Bhootni Ka" (Kaka)
- "Jai Hind"
"Bhootni Ka" was released as a single on 29 September and "Choozay" on 3 October. Webdunia found the songs forgettable in the film itself.
Udta Teer OTT release: when and where?
Nothing is confirmed yet. NewsBytes thinks the film is headed to Netflix, based on the opening credits. It expects the usual 6–8 week gap between theatre and streaming, which would put it around December 2026. Neither Dharma nor any platform has announced a date. Until one does, see our weekly list of new OTT releases this week.
What does "उड़ता तीर" mean?
Literally, उड़ता तीर means "a flying arrow". The title also plays on a Hindi idiom, उड़ता तीर लेना, which means to bring trouble on yourself by choice. That fits a spy who walks right into the trouble he was sent to cause.
How Udta Teer got here: timeline

Verdict: should you watch Udta Teer?
Watch it in theatres if you enjoyed Ayushmann's concept-driven comedies, like spy stories mixed with patriotism, or want to see Mukul Dev's final screen work on the big screen. The premise is clever and the supporting cast is strong.
Wait for OTT if the writing matters most to you. The most detailed negative review points to unfunny jokes, rushed direction and a thin role for Sara Ali Khan. With a probable streaming release around December, you won't wait long.
Our overall take: it's a fun idea that's uneven in execution. Weekend word of mouth will decide whether it lasts in theatres. We'll update this page with the actual Day 1 numbers and audience reaction tomorrow. For more on today's trending stories, visit the KyunTrend homepage.
