Chaar Yaar story: what the series is about (no spoilers)
The show is set in Mumbai in the early 2000s and follows four middle-class friends who are short of money. They make one desperate decision, linked to luxury car theft, and it leaves them caught between the city's gangsters and the police. The episode titles give you an idea of where it goes, from a friend in trouble to a plan and then to a fight over who runs Mumbai.
Nikhil Madhok, Director and Head of Originals (SVOD) at Prime Video India, said the show blends "friendship, ambition, humour and twists." Critics have compared it to other films. Koimoi calls it Badmaash Company meets Dhoom, and Filmibeat sees some of the grit of Ram Gopal Varma's Satya and Company.
Chaar Yaar web series cast: who plays whom
Early coverage mixed up some of the characters. The list below follows the cast details in Koimoi and Adgully.
The four friends
| Actor | Character |
|---|---|
| Purav Jha | Saahil Shaikh (some sources spell it Sheikh) |
| Prayrak Mehta | Jay Gala |
| Saqib Ayub | Tony Gomes |
| Naman Jain | Sameer Khilji |
Supporting cast
- Sai Tamhankar as Inspector Sumati Bhalerao: the police officer in the story.
- Sikandar Kher as Imti Mamu: the gangster side of the story.
- Also in the cast: Rajesh Tailang, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Chunky Panday, Bhagavathi Perumal, Manav Gohil and M Nasser.
Purav Jha's switch from creator to actor
A lot of the search interest comes from Purav Jha's fans. He's best known for parody videos and for appearing on the first season of The Traitors, and Chaar Yaar is his first major acting role. He told Filmibeat on 22 October 2026: "Traitors mera pehla project tha". Critics agree he's the standout performer. Press-release-style coverage from Adgully and Cinebuster on 24 October 2026 says viewers are praising Jha, Sikandar Kher and Sai Tamhankar. Neither piece gives views, ratings or rankings.
Who made Chaar Yaar? Director, writers and producers
- Director: Vinay Waikul
- Writers: Sambit Mishra and Saurabh Sawant
- Creators: Vinay Waikul, S. Hussain Zaidi, Sambit Mishra and Saurabh Sawant
- Production: Pink Window Production (producers Pranati Nagarsheth, Niraj Nagarsheth and P.S. Shyam). BBC Studios India developed the show.
S. Hussain Zaidi is the best-known name in that list. He's an author known for writing about Mumbai's crime world, and that suits the show's underworld setting.
Is Chaar Yaar based on a true story?
As far as we can tell, no. We found no official source saying Chaar Yaar is based on real events. Zaidi's link to crime writing has led some viewers to assume it is, but nothing from Prime Video or the makers confirms that. We'll update this section if the makers say otherwise.
Chaar Yaar review roundup: what critics are saying
The first reviews came out on 23 and 24 October 2026, and they're split.
| Outlet | Rating | Verdict in brief |
|---|---|---|
| Koimoi | 2.5/5 | Strong start, but the second half is messy and there are too many characters. |
| Flickonclick | 2.5/5 | "A fun start that crashes halfway." |
| IWMBuzz | Positive | "Dark, deft and deeply rooted in dosti." |
| Sunday Guardian | Mixed | The four leads shine, but the writing lets them down. |
| K-waves and Beyond | Mixed | Good actors held back by the writing. |
We couldn't check the show's IMDb rating for this guide, so we haven't quoted one.
What works
- Purav Jha, whom critics single out as the standout.
- A strong opening stretch, according to Koimoi and Flickonclick.
- The early-2000s Mumbai setting and the friendship at the centre of it.
What doesn't
- A second half that critics say gets messy or "crashes".
- Too many characters and an overcrowded plot.
- Writing that, according to Sunday Guardian and K-waves and Beyond, doesn't match the cast.
Is Chaar Yaar worth watching?
It depends on what you want from it. Here's a quick guide:
- Watch it if you like friendship stories and period Mumbai crime settings, or if you're a Purav Jha fan. The full season runs about 5 hours 26 minutes, so it fits in one weekend.
- Skip it, or keep expectations low, if you want a tight, focused crime thriller in the style of Mirzapur. Critics say the plot gets crowded. If that's your genre, our piece on Mirzapur: The Movie and Season 4 covers what's next for that franchise.
- Tip: Critics say the opening episodes are the strongest, so expect the pace to dip in the second half.
If you finish it and want to compare it with another recent streaming release, see our Gajab Raat review for a Netflix option.
Chaar Yaar season 2: is it renewed?
No second season had been announced as of 25 October 2026. We also haven't seen any official viewing numbers or chart rankings from Prime Video. If Season 2 is confirmed, we'll cover it on the KyunTrend homepage.
Chaar Yaar ending explained
The show came out on 23 October 2026, and we haven't yet seen reliable coverage of the ending. We won't guess. A spoiler-marked explainer of the finale, "Bang! Bang! Climax!", will follow once we've confirmed the details. Until then, be wary of "ending explained" posts that seem to have been written before the show came out.
