Best time to visit Maldives: month-by-month weather, prices, mantas and my take on when to book
January to March is the safe answer, but official rainfall data, the manta calendar and people who have spent years on the islands tell a more useful story. Here's how to pick your month by what you actually want from the trip.
TL;DRThe short version
- Safest weather: January to March, the northeast (dry) monsoon. The Maldives Meteorological Service says the islands average 10 to 11 hours of sunshine a day in these months, against 7 to 9 in the rest of the year. It is also the most expensive time to go.
- Best value: the wet season (mid-May to November) is cheaper and is not a washout: in Malé in 2024, June (106 mm) and July (82 mm) had less rain than January (279 mm). August (448 mm) was the wettest month.
- Wildlife changes the answer: for hundreds of feeding manta rays at Hanifaru Bay, go between June and early October. Whale sharks are seen year round in South Ari Atoll, with a peak from August to November.
- Whatever month you pick, fill in the free IMUGA Traveller Declaration within 96 hours before your flight: imuga.immigration.gov.mvIt is free on the official portal. Maldives Immigration warns about other sites that charge for it.

Short answer: the best time to visit Maldives for guaranteed-feeling sunshine is January to March. For the best value, go in the wet season (mid-May to November) and stay a week or more. For manta rays, go to Baa Atoll between June and early October.
That's the summary every guide gives you. The more useful part is below: what the official rainfall numbers actually show, how much the season changes what you pay, and what people who live and work on the islands tell their own clients.
The two seasons, according to the people who measure them
The Maldives Meteorological Service splits the year in two:
- Northeast monsoon (dry season): January to March. Calmer seas, 10 to 11 hours of sunshine a day.
- Southwest monsoon (wet season): mid-May to November. More rain and wind, and 7 to 9 hours of sunshine a day.
- December and April are transition months. Many guides fold them into the dry season. They're usually good, but less certain.
Two things from the same source matter more than the season names:
- It's hot all year. Temperatures sit between 25°C and 32°C in every month. You aren't choosing between warm and cold, only between more sun and less.
- Rain usually comes as showers, with sunny spells in between, rather than all-day downpours.
What the rainfall numbers actually show
Here is monthly rainfall and sunshine for Malé in 2024, from the Maldives Bureau of Statistics yearbook (data from the Met Service). One year isn't a long-term average, but it shows how lumpy the "wet season" really is:
| Month | Rain in Malé (mm) | Sunshine (hours) | Season |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 279 | 238 | Dry |
| February | 99 | 231 | Dry |
| March | 94 | 276 | Dry |
| April | 273 | 239 | Transition |
| May | 372 | 198 | Wet |
| June | 106 | 243 | Wet |
| July | 82 | 215 | Wet |
| August | 448 | 171 | Wet |
| September | 205 | 235 | Wet |
| October | 186 | 257 | Wet |
| November | 224 | 190 | Wet |
| December | 267 | 242 | Transition |

What jumps out: in 2024, June and July were drier in Malé than January, while May and August were the real wet months. Don't read this as "June is always dry". The point is that the wet season comes in bursts, which is exactly what the people below describe.
Where you stay matters too. The Met Service says rainfall rises from north to south: about 1,779 mm a year in the northern atolls, 1,966 mm in the centre and 2,218 mm in the south. If you're travelling in the wet season, a resort in the north or centre gives you slightly better odds.
What locals and long-time visitors say
These are the creators' own experiences and advice, credited to them. The links go to their full videos.
Kate Hamby of Maldives Secrets, who runs a Maldives travel agency with her partner, says the internet usually calls November to April the dry season, but that November and December can be unpredictable. If you want to be safe and don't want any rain at all, she says to come from January to April. She also calls May a bad month to travel because it's the start of the wet season, with rough seas and wind. Yet she recalls one June, a year or two before the video, that was completely sunny, and says the seasons have become harder to predict.
Devon and Ina of Maldives Budget Escape, who say they've travelled the Maldives in every season and visited more than 30 local islands, go month by month. February is their pick when a client cares most about weather. For July they feel better booking 7 to 10 nights than a short trip where every day has to be perfect. August, they say, is the month when two clients can come home with completely different stories, one with sunshine almost every day and one with several wet days. September is the month they're most careful about. Their reminder applies to every month: you're choosing your chances, not a guarantee.
PassportAdventuresTV makes a logistics point that's easy to miss: seaplane transfers only fly in daylight, so if your flight lands late at night you may need a night near Malé before you reach your resort. That matters most in the shorter, darker days of the wet season, when weather can also delay boats.
Pick your month by what you want
| If you want... | Go in | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The safest sunshine (short trip, honeymoon) | January to March | Driest, calmest, most sunshine. Book early: it's peak season |
| Good weather for less | Early December or April | Transition months; prices start to fall in April |
| The lowest prices | June, July, October | Cheaper rooms, often long sunny spells. Stay 7+ nights |
| Hundreds of manta rays | June to early October | Hanifaru Bay feeding season, Baa Atoll (snorkel only) |
| Whale sharks | Any month; August to November is peak | South Ari Atoll Marine Protected Area |
| Mantas without the monsoon | February to April | South Ari's manta peak, per Visit Maldives |
| To avoid | Christmas and New Year if price matters; May if you want calm seas | Peak prices; start of the monsoon |
The wildlife calendar, in detail
- Hanifaru Bay, Baa Atoll (a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve): Visit Maldives says the best time is June to early October. Its manta map gives the wider window as May/June to November, when the southwest monsoon piles up plankton and draws hundreds of mantas. Scuba diving is no longer allowed in the bay, so you snorkel.
- South Ari Atoll: whale sharks are seen all year, with a peak from August to November. Mantas gather here in the northeast monsoon, roughly October to May, with the best viewing from February to April.
What it costs on top of the room
Room rates swing with the season and the resort, so I won't quote them. What's the same in every month:
- Green tax: since 1 January 2025, the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority lists $12 per person per night at resorts, resort hotels, larger hotels and liveaboards, and $6 at guesthouses and small hotels on inhabited islands. Children under two are exempt. On a 7-night resort stay for two, that's $168 before anything else, so check whether your quote includes it.
- Visa: a free 30-day tourist visa on arrival. You need a passport with at least one month's validity, a confirmed return ticket, a prepaid booking at a registered property and enough funds, plus the free IMUGA declaration within 96 hours before arrival.
- Transfers: speedboat or seaplane to your resort, priced separately by most resorts. Check this before you compare room rates.
My take
This verdict is built from the official data and the people above, who know these islands far better than any search result, so weigh it that way.
For a first trip or a honeymoon, I'd book February or March. It's the one window where the Met Service data, Kate Hamby and Devon and Ina all agree, and on a short, expensive trip, sunshine is worth paying for.
If price matters more, I'd skip the "dry season or nothing" advice and go in late June, July or October for a week or more. The 2024 numbers and the locals both say the wet season comes in bursts, not a wall of rain. Devon and Ina's 7-to-10-night rule is the smartest advice on this page: the longer you stay, the less one bad stretch matters. Pick a resort in the northern or central atolls and a property that has things to do when it rains.
I'd avoid May for a beach holiday: it's the start of the monsoon, and Kate Hamby calls it a bad month to travel and Christmas to New Year if you're counting money.
And if mantas are the dream, I'd go against the crowd: Hanifaru Bay in July, August or September, with a long enough stay to wait for the right day. It's the one experience the dry season can't give you.
What is the best time to visit Maldives?
January to March is the safest time for sunshine and calm seas, during the northeast (dry) monsoon. December and April are transition months that are often good too. The wet season, from mid-May to November, is cheaper and often has long sunny spells, but the weather is less predictable.
What is the rainy season in Maldives?
The southwest monsoon, from mid-May to November, according to the Maldives Meteorological Service. Rain usually comes as showers with sunny periods between them rather than all-day rain. May and August are often among the wettest months.
What is the cheapest time to go to Maldives?
Roughly May to October, the southwest monsoon, when resorts and guesthouses lower prices. The Christmas and New Year period is the most expensive. If you go in the wet season, a stay of 7 to 10 nights gives you a better chance of enough good days.
When can you see manta rays in the Maldives?
Visit Maldives says the best time for Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll is June to early October. Scuba diving is no longer allowed there, but you can snorkel. In South Ari Atoll, mantas are seen in the northeast monsoon, roughly October to May, with a peak from February to April.
Is it worth visiting the Maldives in the monsoon?
It can be, if your trip is about the resort, the spa and the water rather than daily boat trips, and if you stay long enough to ride out a rainy spell. It is the time for Hanifaru's mantas. For a short honeymoon where every day has to be perfect, I'd pick January to March.
