Gandhinagar election result 2026: BJP wins 38 of 44, Congress 5

Counting for all 44 seats of the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC) on Tuesday, 13 October, left the BJP in charge again. By Divya Bhaskar's ward-wise tally the BJP swept eight of 11 wards, Congress won all four seats in ward 6 plus one in ward 7, an independent broke the BJP panel in ward 2, and AAP drew a blank.

TL;DRThe short version

  • BJP retains Gandhinagar: of the 44 seats in 11 wards, the BJP won 38, Congress 5 and an independent 1; AAP won none (our count from Divya Bhaskar's ward-wise results, 13 Oct; ABP Asmita had BJP 30, Congress 5, independent 1 with 36 seats declared at 11:45 AM).
  • Where the BJP lost seats: Congress swept ward 6 (all four), took the SC seat in ward 7 (Naginbhai Nadiya), and independent Dipikaben Vaghela won in ward 2 (ABP Asmita, IANS).

Short answer: the BJP has kept the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation. Counting for all 44 seats ran through the morning of Tuesday, 13 October 2026. By Divya Bhaskar's ward-wise list, the party won 38 seats, Congress 5, an independent 1, and the Aam Aadmi Party none. That is three fewer seats for the BJP than in 2021, when it won 41.

The totals are our addition of Divya Bhaskar's ward-by-ward results. They match ABP Asmita's earlier count of BJP 30, Congress 5 and independent 1, which it published at 11:45 AM with 36 of the 44 seats declared. The Gujarat State Election Commission's formal declaration is the final word.

Who won where

Ward 6, the upset. Congress won all four seats. ABP Asmita names the winners as Hansaben Ninama, Meghnaben (Desai), Mehulkumar Rathod and Karmjitsinh Vaghela. In 2021 this was the ward AAP won its only seat in (myCorporator).

Ward 7 (Kolvada, Vavol). The BJP's Kinjalben Thakor (7,306 votes), Sonalba Vaghela (7,044) and Shaileshkumar Patel won three seats. Congress's Naginbhai Nadiya took the seat reserved for a Scheduled Caste candidate with 6,130 votes. The ward recorded 54,446 valid votes and 183 NOTA votes, and AAP's best candidate there got 1,008 (IANS).

Ward 2. Independent Dipikaben Vaghela won one seat, so the BJP won three. Divya Bhaskar reported that BJP candidate Diptiben fell ill after losing.

BJP clean sweeps. The full BJP panels won in wards 1, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10 and 11. ABP Asmita names some of the winners:

  • Ward 3: Mitalben, Sonaliben Patel, Ankit Barot and Umesh Jha
  • Ward 5: Hemaben Bhatt, Dhvani Shah, Kanaiya Desai and Kinjalkumar Patel
  • Ward 9: Shardaben Thakor, Vaidehi Raval, Jayantibhai Dabhi and Mahendrabhai Patel

In ward 1, the BJP's Shilpaben Thakor beat Congress's Jalpaben Thakor for seat 1 (Lokmat).

Turnout and the contest

Polling was held on 11 October. 1,54,045 of 2,59,985 registered voters voted, a turnout of 59.25%. Ward 4 had the highest turnout (74.78%) and ward 5 the lowest (48.63%) (IANS). There were 130 candidates: 44 each from the BJP and Congress, 32 from AAP, one from the BSP and the rest independents (myCorporator, Aaj Tak).

The vote came during the row over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, with the Opposition alleging "vote chori" (PTI via ABP Live). The Gandhinagar result does not settle that argument either way. ABP Asmita said Congress gained in both seats and vote share, while AAP, which won a seat in 2021, failed to open its account.

Okha and Thara

The same counting day covered the Okha (Devbhumi Dwarka) and Thara (Banaskantha) municipalities, plus by-elections in Kheralu, Chhota Udepur and Bayad (PTI via ABP Live). At ABP Asmita's 11:45 AM update, the BJP was ahead in both. In Okha it had 24 seats to Congress's 4 among those declared, out of 36. In Thara it had 19 to Congress's 1. These were partial counts; check the SEC site for the final figures.

What happens next

  • Formal declaration: the Gujarat State Election Commission's schedule says the election process must be completed by 16 October 2026 (myCorporator, citing the SEC).
  • Mayor: Gandhinagar's mayor is not directly elected. The 44 corporators will elect the Mayor and Deputy Mayor for a two-and-a-half-year term, with the post rotating between reserved categories. No date has been announced yet (myCorporator).
