Chinmay Sutar 400*: Mizoram batter's Ranji Trophy quadruple century, and where it ranks
In only his second first-class match, 29-year-old Chinmay Sutar made 400 not out for Mizoram against Nagaland in the Ranji Trophy Plate League on Monday. It's the second-highest score in Ranji history and only the second 400 by an Indian. Here's the scorecard, the records it broke and the one it didn't.
TL;DRThe short version
- 400 not out, 517 balls, 46 fours, 7 sixes: Mizoram's Chinmay Sutar finished unbeaten on 400 against Nagaland in Sovima on Monday 19 October 2026, and Mizoram declared on 581/9 (Cricbuzz scorecard).
- Second-highest score in Ranji Trophy history, passing Prithvi Shaw's 379. Only BB Nimbalkar's 443* (Maharashtra v Kathiawar, 1948-49) is higher, which also makes Sutar only the second Indian to score a first-class 400.
- Second first-class match, maiden hundred: Sutar was run out for 99 on debut last week. Per Cricinfo, no batter had ever turned a maiden first-class century into a 400 before. He was on 231 when the ninth wicket fell and added an unbroken 189 with No. 11 Lalrempuia Chhakchhuak (14 off 76).

Short answer: Chinmay Sutar's 400 is real and it's historic. The 29-year-old Mizoram left-hander finished on 400 not out off 517 balls against Nagaland in the Ranji Trophy Plate League on Monday 19 October 2026. That's the second-highest score in Ranji Trophy history and only the second first-class 400 by an Indian, behind BB Nimbalkar's 443* from 1948-49. He did it in his second first-class match.
How the innings unfolded
Mizoram were 13 for 1 early on Day 1 (18 October) in Sovima, near Dimapur, and Sutar came in at No. 3. The scorecard tells the story in partnerships:
| Stage | Score | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| 5th wicket fell | 314/5 | Sutar and wicketkeeper Jehu Anderson (69) added 168 |
| Collapse | 349/8 | Two wickets fell off consecutive balls in the 98th over |
| 9th wicket fell | 392/9 | Sutar was on 231 (Indian Express) |
| Declaration | 581/9 d | Unbroken 189 for the 10th wicket with Lalrempuia Chhakchhuak (14* off 76) |
Read that last row again. Sutar scored roughly 169 runs with the No. 11 at the other end, farming the strike and, by his own account to Cricinfo, giving his partner "one or two balls every over." He was 392 not out at tea and got to 400 in the 155th over, at which point Mizoram declared.
Cricinfo puts that 189 as the third-highest last-wicket stand in Ranji history, 43 short of the 233 by Ajay Sharma and Maninder Singh for Delhi against Mumbai in 1991-92. (Cricbuzz's written highlights say 199, but its own scorecard shows 189, so we're going with 189.)
Where 400* ranks
- Ranji Trophy: second all-time, behind Nimbalkar's 443* for Maharashtra v Kathiawar (1948-49). It moves past Prithvi Shaw's 379, which had been No. 2.
- Indians in first-class cricket: only Nimbalkar had scored 400 before.
- All first-class cricket: the 12th score of 400-plus ever, per Cricinfo. Brian Lara's 501* for Warwickshire in 1994 is still the highest.
- A first: Cricinfo says no batter had ever turned a maiden first-class hundred into a quadruple century. The previous best maiden ton was Sakibul Gani's 341 for Bihar, in February 2022, against Mizoram.
Who is Chinmay Sutar?
He's a product of Mumbai's maidans who waited years for a first-class game. According to Cricinfo, he played for Sind Sports Club and then the Cricket Club of India, made Mumbai's Under-23 side before Covid, and played four Vijay Hazare Trophy (List A) matches in 2021-22 before going back to the fringes. In June 2026 he helped MSC Maratha Royals defend their Mumbai T20 League title, scoring 212 runs in six innings.
Before this season he took a no-objection certificate from the Mumbai Cricket Association and moved to Mizoram after trials. On debut last week against Manipur he made 35 and 99, run out. His father, Rajesh Sutar, also played briefly for Mumbai in the early 1990s and also made his first-class debut at 29.
"I wanted to play first-class cricket wherever it was, irrespective of the level," Sutar told Cricinfo. "Mizoram called me for trials, and it worked." He said he didn't know what the Ranji record was until he reached 380 and heard claps from the dressing room.
Does a Plate League 400 count?
Yes. Plate League games are full Ranji Trophy matches with first-class status, so the runs go into the record books. The fair caveat is the opposition: Plate sides are weaker than Elite ones, and this was Nagaland's attack. Sutar's answer, when Cricinfo put that to him, was about exposure: "North-East sides don't get the exposure, but the spirit of the players is amazing."
What it does mean in practice is that a 29-year-old who couldn't get a game for Mumbai now has 534 runs in three first-class innings. Selectors notice numbers like that, even from the Plate group.
What happens next
Nagaland closed Day 2 on 50 for 1, still 531 behind. Day 3 is Tuesday 20 October. With a lead that big, Mizoram will be pushing for an innings win. Live scores are on the Cricbuzz scorecard.
01
Myth Chinmay Sutar broke the Ranji Trophy record.
Fact Not quite. His 400* is the second-highest Ranji score. The record is still BB Nimbalkar's 443* for Maharashtra against Kathiawar in 1948-49, which is also the highest first-class score by an Indian.
02
Myth Plate League runs aren't first-class.
Fact Plate League matches are full Ranji Trophy games, so they're first-class. Sutar's 400 counts in his first-class record, and Cricinfo lists it as only the 12th score of 400 or more in first-class history.
03
Myth He scored 400 on debut.
Fact It was his second first-class match and third innings. On debut against Manipur last week he made 35 and was run out for 99.
