How the golds were won
Mona Agarwal came from sixth. In the 10m air rifle final, Mona was sixth at one stage (Mint's live blog, 10:31 AM IST). She then climbed past defending champion Avani Lekhara and won by 0.4 points, 250.0 to 249.6. She had already topped qualifying with 629.1, also a Games record, ahead of Avani's 626.4 (India Today). Mona won bronze at the Paris 2024 Paralympics.
Nishad Kumar won in a new event. Nishad's two Paralympic silvers came in the high jump. Here he entered the T47 long jump, his first international long jump event (Indian Express), and won it. He jumped 7.11 m twice. Uzbekistan's Omadbek Khasanov took silver with 6.99 m and Sri Lanka's Mohammadu Safran bronze with 6.55 m (Mint, 2:05 PM IST).
Rinku won on his last throw. Rinku's final-round 65.11 m pushed Ajeet Singh (65.02 m) to silver by 9 cm. Both were season's bests (India Today).
Soumya led an Indian 1-2. Soumya won the women's 1500m T12/T13 in a personal best 5:12.39. Radha Venkatesh took silver in 5:30.90.
Close calls and a disqualification
- Rakshitha Raju crossed third in the women's 1500m T11 and was first announced as the bronze medallist (Mint, 3:53 PM IST). She was then disqualified. India Today says it was for breaking rules on clothing, footwear and bibs. The bronze went to Ravanni Valasanaini, so India's tally didn't change.
- Kokila beat reigning world champion Liu Yi of China on golden score in the J2 -52 kg semi-final, then lost the final.
- India finished just off the podium in swimming. Himanshu Nandal was 4th in the 100m backstroke S11 (1:13.77). Niranjan Mukundan and Gopichand Lingutla were 4th and 5th in the 400m freestyle S7 (Mint).
Records that matter more than the count
Archer Sheetal Devi scored 704/720 in the women's compound ranking round. That equals the world record, which she now shares with Türkiye's Öznur Cüre, and beats her own Asian record of 698 (Mint). India Today says she then helped set a new world mark in the mixed team ranking round. On debut, Swati Chaudhary scored 648 in the women's W1 ranking round, a Games record. The old mark was 627 (Mint). Ranking rounds give no medals, but they decide the seedings. Sheetal goes into the eliminations as the top seed.

Our read: a strong start, but check the field sizes
Eleven medals on day one is a fast start. Para-athletics head coach Satyanarayana said on 18 October that he expected six athletics medals on Monday, including two to three golds (NewKerala). India got exactly six athletics medals, and three of them were gold. The forecast was accurate, and that suggests the team planned these events well.
Some context is useful, though. Mint reported that the men's F46 javelin final had only three competitors: Rinku, Ajeet Singh and Indonesia's Rizal Bagus Saktiyono. Para events are split into many classes and some have small fields, so medal counts can make a team look stronger than the competition really was. Marks like Mona's 250.0 and Sheetal's 704 are better tests, because they're measured against Games and world records rather than against whoever entered. On those numbers, India's shooters and archers are genuinely among the best in Asia.
Reaching the target of about 100 medals means winning roughly 89 more in five days, or close to 18 a day. Day 1 produced 11. India will need many more medals from para-badminton, table tennis, archery and powerlifting later in the week to get there. India won 111 in Hangzhou, its best Asian Para Games, so the target is realistic, but India will need far more than 11 a day.
What's next for India
- Medals already guaranteed: Nitesh Kumar and Thulasimathi Murugesan went unbeaten through their para-badminton mixed doubles SL3-SU5 group, which takes them into the semi-finals and guarantees at least a bronze (Mint).
- Table tennis: Bhavina Patel (Class 4-5), Prachi Pandey (Class 6) and Sonalben (Class 3) reached the women's singles semi-finals (India Today). India Today says Prachi's run gives India its first-ever Asian Para Games medal in women's Class 6.
- Archery: with qualifying done, the compound and recurve elimination rounds come next. Sheetal Devi is the top seed in the women's compound.
- Para-athletics: para-athletics is India's biggest group at the Games, with 62 athletes (Sportstar). The squad includes Sumit Antil, two-time Paralympic champion in the javelin F64, who set a world record of 74.82 m in May 2026 (Outlook India).
Competition ends on Saturday, 24 October. Every result and medal update is on the official results site linked at the top. KyunTrend will update this tally as India's medal count changes.
