Chandigarh Sector 22 shooting: what is confirmed

The reports we reviewed agree on these points:

  • Victim: a 17-year-old Class 11 student. He was hit in the chest and declared dead at the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital in Sector 16 (GMSH-16). We are not naming him or his school because he was a minor.
  • Time and place: about 9:28–9:30 pm on Thursday 22 October 2026, outside a temple in Sector 22-B. Sector 22 is one of Chandigarh's busiest residential and market sectors, close to the Sector 17 city centre.
  • Attack: three men on a motorcycle chased the auto-rickshaw he was travelling in and fired at it.
  • Other injured: the auto-rickshaw driver, a man in his 50s, was grazed on the shoulder and is stable (PTC News).
  • Weapon: believed to be a .32 bore pistol.

The encounter on 24 October 2026

Police took one of the accused shooters to the Sector 50 forest area on Saturday morning to recover the weapon. According to the police account in The Tribune and ANI, he fired at the team, and police fired back and hit him in the leg. Reports do not say whether the weapon was recovered. We could not find any official names for the accused, the hospital where he is being treated, the FIR sections or a police statement on record. Treat the details of the encounter as the police's version until they are confirmed officially.

The motive police are examining

According to The Tribune, the victim allegedly beat the juvenile accused in a Sector 34 park a few hours before the shooting. A video of it was posted on Instagram and later deleted. Police say the juvenile was at the scene to point the victim out to the shooters. The rivalry reportedly started at the victim's previous school. Police are also checking for a link to Lucky Patial's gang, which claimed the March 2026 shooting of a property dealer in Sector 9. A contract killing is another line of inquiry. The case moved to the Operations Cell after the gang link came up. No motive has been confirmed.

What Chandigarh Police have said so far

We found no formal police statement on record. Everything attributed to police here comes from news reports. The FIR was first filed at Sector 17 police station, and the Operations Cell then took over. A killing like this is normally registered as murder under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, with Arms Act charges where a firearm is involved. Police have not made the FIR sections public.

Next, police will usually:

  1. Recover the weapon and run ballistics tests to match it to cartridges found at the scene.
  2. Go through CCTV footage along the chase route and trace the motorcycle.
  3. Question the arrested accused about where the gun came from and whether anyone else planned or paid for the attack.
  4. Check the deleted Instagram video and other phone data.

"Detained" and "arrested" mean different things legally. Our explainer on the difference between being detained and being arrested sets out how they differ.

The gun-access question: how do teenagers get firearms?

The biggest question in this case is how a pistol ended up in a feud involving teenagers. Indian law is strict on paper:

  • Age limit: under the Arms Act, 1959, nobody under 21 can get an arms licence.
  • Licensed weapons: a licence holder is responsible for keeping the weapon safe. If a licensed gun is misused, the licence can be suspended or cancelled.
  • Illegal weapons: carrying an unlicensed or locally made pistol is an offence under the Arms Act in its own right.

The gang angle police are checking matters here. If an organised gang supplied the shooters or the weapon, adults face ordinary criminal charges, including conspiracy. Police have not said where the pistol came from.

What happens to the minor accused

One accused in custody is a minor, so his case goes through the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015:

  • He will be produced before the Juvenile Justice Board instead of a regular magistrate.
  • Murder counts as a "heinous offence" under the Act. For a child aged 16 to 18, the Board carries out a preliminary assessment and can send the case to a Children's Court to be tried as an adult.
  • The law bans publishing the identity of a child in conflict with the law, and of a child victim. That includes names, photos and school details. The ban covers social media posts too.

The adult accused face the ordinary criminal process.

What residents and parents can do right now

  • Don't share videos or names of anyone involved, especially minors. Doing so can be illegal and can harm the case.
  • Give information to the police, not to WhatsApp groups. Call 112 in an emergency, or contact your local police station.
  • Talk to teenagers about fights and threats on Instagram. Police say a deleted Instagram video was part of the build-up in this case.
  • If there is a licensed weapon at home, make sure it is locked away.
