Best places to visit in New Zealand: Queenstown, Milford Sound, Aoraki/Mount Cook, Tongariro and beyond, with 2026 entry costs
Searches for the best places to visit in New Zealand have climbed all year. Here's where to go on each island, what it now costs just to get in, the road and parking rules that catch visitors out, and what people who've driven it say they'd do differently.
TL;DRThe short version
- Most of the famous scenery is on the South Island: Queenstown, Milford Sound, Lake Tekapo, Aoraki/Mount Cook and the West Coast glaciers. On the North Island, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is the big day hike.
- Getting in costs more than it used to: most visitors pay the NZD 100 International Visitor Levy. UK and US travellers also need an NZeTA (NZD 17 in the app, NZD 23 online). Indian passport holders need a visitor visa: NZD 341 per application plus NZD 100 per person for the levy (INZ Fees Guide, May 2026).
- Plan for the roads: the Milford Road from Te Anau to Milford Sound is 120 km, about 2 hours without stops, and can close for weather, rockfall or avalanche risk. From Labour weekend (late October) to 30 April, Tongariro's road-end car parks have a 4-hour limit, so book a shuttle.
- If you need an NZeTA, get it from Immigration New Zealand's own app or website, not a third-party site that charges more: immigration.govt.nzINZ says an NZeTA is issued within 72 hours, so don't leave it to the airport.

Short answer: the best places to visit in New Zealand for a first trip are mostly on the South Island: Queenstown as a base, Milford Sound in Fiordland, Lake Tekapo and Aoraki/Mount Cook, plus Wanaka and the West Coast. On the North Island, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is the big one.
The two islands are a long way apart and the roads are slower than they look, so the list below is grouped by area, with the 2026 rules and costs for each.
South Island: lakes, fiords and mountains
Queenstown and Wanaka. Queenstown is the adventure base, with jet boats, bungy and the gondola, and it has its own airport. Wanaka is about an hour away over the Crown Range.
Milford Sound. The fiord most people come for. The Department of Conservation says the Milford Road from Te Anau is 120 km and takes about 2 hours without stops, and from Queenstown you have to drive to Te Anau first. Expect closures and delays for weather, rockfall, and snow or avalanche risk in winter. Freedom camping within 200 m of the road isn't allowed, and mobile reception is limited to a few stops. Many people fly in instead, but flights depend on the weather too, as Kinny & JJ found below.
Lake Tekapo and Aoraki/Mount Cook. The lake and the mountain views are on almost every itinerary. The Hooker Valley Track, near Mount Cook village, is the popular easy walk.
The West Coast and the quieter regions. Franz Josef and Fox glaciers, Lake Matheson and Punakaiki on the West Coast, Nelson in the north, Kaikōura for whale watching and the Catlins in the far south are where the creators below send people who want fewer crowds.
North Island: Tongariro
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing. DOC now lists it as 20.2 km one way, taking 7–8 hours from November to April and about 9 hours from May to October, when you need alpine skills or a guide. From Labour weekend (late October; Labour Day is Monday 26 October this year) to 30 April, the road-end car parks have a 4-hour parking limit, so DOC suggests booking a shuttle. DOC also puts out a "Not Recommended Today" advisory on days when the forecast wind or wind chill makes the crossing dangerous. Source: DOC
| If you want... | Go to | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| A first-trip base | Queenstown | Own airport; day trips to Milford Sound and Wanaka |
| The classic fiord | Milford Sound | 120 km from Te Anau; check the road before leaving |
| Mountain views without a hard hike | Aoraki/Mount Cook, Hooker Valley Track | Go on a clear day; the views depend on it |
| Fewer crowds | West Coast, Nelson, the Catlins | The West Coast is wet, which is what makes it green |
| A big one-day hike | Tongariro Alpine Crossing (North Island) | 20.2 km; book a shuttle in summer |

South Island Explained, made by someone who has lived on the South Island for more than five years, says the biggest mistake is doing only the famous circuit: Christchurch, Tekapo, Mount Cook, Queenstown, Wanaka and Milford Sound. It suggests the West Coast, Nelson (the sunniest part of the country), Kaikōura and the Catlins, and an overnight cruise on Doubtful Sound instead of Milford if you can afford it. It says the peak months are November to February, recommends October, March, April and May for fewer crowds, and says weather depends on which side of the Southern Alps you're on: the West Coast gets more than 200 days of rain a year, while the east is generally drier. For forecasts it recommends MetService over a phone's default weather app.
Kinny & JJ, in a one-week South Island video posted in August 2026, warn that Christchurch and Queenstown airports are about 6 hours apart by road, so choose based on your route. They split the week into two bases, three nights in Queenstown and three in Lake Tekapo, to avoid packing up every day. Their Milford Sound helicopter flight was cancelled twice for weather. At the Hooker Valley Track they paid $3 an hour or $15 a day to park near the trailhead rather than walk from the free parking along the road. Their highlight was a 50-minute scenic flight over the glaciers, at $285 per person.
Currently Hannah, who toured the South Island by campervan in the low season, booked campsites, even the single campsite near Milford Sound, the night before, but says in high season you may need a week's notice. She changed her whole route on day two to catch a clear-weather window at Mount Cook and recommends planning around the forecast. One update: her video is from 2023, and New Zealand's self-contained vehicle rules have since tightened. Since 7 June 2026, the government says you need a green warrant and a fixed toilet to use self-contained-only camping spots, and blue stickers are no longer valid. Check this with your rental company.

Entry rules and costs
- International Visitor Levy: most visitors pay NZD 100, charged with the visa or NZeTA, per Immigration New Zealand.
- UK and US travellers: you need an NZeTA: NZD 17 in the official app or NZD 23 on the INZ website, issued within 72 hours, per INZ. INZ warns that some third-party sites aren't legitimate.
- Indian passport holders: you need a visitor visa. The INZ Fees Guide (May 2026) puts it at NZD 341 per application (NZD 300 fee plus a NZD 41 immigration levy) plus NZD 100 IVL per person. Its own example: an Indian couple applying together from India pays NZD 541.
My take
I haven't been to New Zealand. This verdict is built from the official rules and costs above and from the people who've travelled it, so weigh it that way.
With one or two weeks, I'd stay on the South Island and not try to see both islands. The distances are too big, and two of the three creators above had their plans changed by the weather.
I'd use two or three bases rather than moving every night, the way Kinny & JJ did: Queenstown, then Tekapo or Mount Cook, and Te Anau if Milford Sound matters to you. And I'd keep a spare day for Milford, because the road and the flights both depend on the weather.
I'd go in March or April, or in October to early November, for the shoulder-season crowds, and I'd add one quieter region, the West Coast or the Catlins, instead of a third day in Queenstown.
And I'd budget for getting in. For an Indian family the visa and levy alone are a real cost before you've booked a flight, and for UK and US visitors the NZeTA plus the levy is NZD 117 per person even in the app.
What are the best places to visit in New Zealand?
On the South Island: Queenstown, Milford Sound in Fiordland, Lake Tekapo, Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, Wanaka and the West Coast glaciers. On the North Island: the Tongariro Alpine Crossing in Tongariro National Park, a World Heritage site. For fewer crowds, people who live there also suggest the West Coast, Nelson, Kaikōura and the Catlins.
How much does it cost to enter New Zealand in 2026?
Most visitors pay the NZD 100 International Visitor Levy. Visa-waiver travellers, including UK and US citizens, also need an NZeTA, which costs NZD 17 in the official app or NZD 23 on the website. Indian citizens need a visitor visa, which the May 2026 INZ Fees Guide puts at NZD 341 per application plus NZD 100 per person for the levy.
How long is the drive to Milford Sound?
DOC says the Milford Road from Te Anau to Milford Sound is 120 km and takes about 2 hours without stops. From Queenstown you first have to drive to Te Anau. The road can close because of weather, rockfall, or snow and avalanche risk in winter, so check its status before you set off.
When is the best time to visit New Zealand?
December to February is summer and the busiest time. A South Island creator who has lived there for more than five years recommends the shoulder months, October, March, April and May, for fewer crowds, and says autumn often has more stable weather. Winter (June to August) is for skiing and snowy mountain views.
Can I freedom camp in a campervan in New Zealand?
Only where the local council, DOC or LINZ allows it. Since 7 June 2026, a vehicle needs a green warrant and a fixed toilet to use spots reserved for self-contained vehicles; blue stickers and portable toilets no longer count.
