Weather Bengaluru today (Saturday, 24 October 2026): expect moderate rain with thunder, under an IMD yellow alert for Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural and other South Interior Karnataka districts. The rain comes from the northeast monsoon, which began on 15 October. It is likely to continue through the last week of October, then ease to scattered showers around 27–29 October.
Days are cloudy and cool, at about 27°C in the afternoon and 21°C overnight. Rain tends to start in the afternoon and get heavier in the evening, as it did on Thursday 22 October, when roads flooded and people coming back from the Dasara holidays were caught in it. Below you'll find a forecast for each district (Bengaluru, Kolar, Mysuru, the coast and Malnad), what the alert colours mean, commute tips and a short summary in Kannada.
TL;DR
- Alert: IMD has a yellow alert out for Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural and South Interior Karnataka (SIK). Yellow means "be aware". It does not mean "stay home".
- Next few days: moderate thundershowers in Bengaluru on 24 October. Rain is likely across most SIK districts on 25–26 October, and it should drop to one or two places by 27–29 October.
- Schools: we found no reports of rain holidays for Bengaluru schools as of 24 October.
- Do this now: before you head out in the evening, check the live rain radar for Bengaluru on RainViewer. For the official week-ahead picture, read IMD's extended range outlook (PDF).
Weather Bengaluru: key facts
- Why it's raining: the northeast monsoon set in over South Interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema on 15 October 2026 (IMD, via The Week).
- Current alert: yellow, for Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural and other SIK districts (IMD, via TV9 Kannada and Vartha Bharati).
- Week-ahead outlook, 22–28 October: isolated heavy rain over SIK on many days, and above-normal rainfall over south Peninsular India (IMD extended range outlook).

- Rainfall totals: none of the reports we checked gave a figure in mm for 22 or 23 October. For measured totals, use IMD Bengaluru or KSNDMC's Varuna Mitra service.
Bengaluru weather today and the 5-day forecast
This follows IMD's warning of 23 October as it was reported. IMD updates its warnings every day, so check the latest bulletin before you make plans.

What time? Recent days have followed a pattern: dry or cloudy mornings, rain from the afternoon and the heaviest spells in the evening. That isn't guaranteed, but it's the best guide if you're planning a commute.
District-wise Karnataka forecast: Bengaluru, Kolar, Mysuru, the coast and Malnad
IMD issues Karnataka warnings by subdivision: Coastal Karnataka, North Interior Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka. It then names districts where it expects heavier rain. The Malnad districts fall inside the SIK subdivision, so the SIK forecast covers them too. Here is how the current forecast plays out by region.
| Region / districts | Alert | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural | Yellow | Moderate thundershowers on 24 October, with rain likely on 25–26 October, mostly in the afternoon and evening |
| Ramanagara, Chamarajanagar | Yellow (SIK) | Heavy rain in one or two places on 24 October |
| Kolar, Tumakuru | Yellow (SIK) | Rain likely on 25–26 October |
| Mysuru, Mandya | Yellow (SIK) | Thunderstorms on 24 October, with rain likely on 25–26 October |
| Malnad belt (part of SIK) | Check district bulletin | The SIK-wide forecast applies: isolated heavy rain on some days until about 28 October |
| Coastal Karnataka | Check district bulletin | Heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning and squalls on 23 October. The reports we saw didn't give a day-by-day coastal forecast after that |
| North Interior Karnataka | Not named in the latest alerts | Turning dry from about 27 October |
When will the rain stop in Bengaluru? Why the dates don't match
You may have seen 24, 25, 26, 28 and 29 October all quoted as the end date. That's because IMD has extended the yellow alert a few days at a time: first to 22 October, then to 24, then 26, and now reports point to 29 October. Each extension makes a new headline, so the dates you find depend on which day a story was written.
Taking the reports together, rain is likely through the last week of October and should thin out to scattered spells around 27–29 October. IMD's outlook for 22–28 October still calls for above-normal rain over south Peninsular India, so don't expect a clear break before then.
What IMD's alert colours mean
- Green: no warning, no action needed.
- Yellow (current): be aware. Heavy rain or thunderstorms are possible in some places, so keep an eye on updates and plan travel around the downpours.
- Orange: be prepared. Heavier, more widespread rain could disrupt transport and power.
- Red: take action. Severe weather is expected and local authorities may issue instructions.
To see what a red alert looks like when it is actually issued, read our coverage of the Chennai red alert for extremely heavy rain. The same northeast monsoon system brings Tamil Nadu its main rain season.
Why it's raining now: the northeast monsoon (ಹಿಂಗಾರು)
Kannada media call the northeast monsoon ಹಿಂಗಾರು (hingaru). The southwest monsoon (June to September) brings Karnataka most of its rain. The northeast monsoon takes over from October. In Bengaluru it usually shows up as afternoon and evening thunderstorms, not the steady all-day drizzle of July.
This year's southwest monsoon was weak. It arrived late, on 4 June, and IMD forecast only 90% of the long-period average because of El Niño (Down To Earth). Rain from the northeast monsoon has been steady since about 15 October. If you want the background, our explainer on El Niño and October rain covers how it affects India's seasons.
Bengaluru rain trouble spots: where it flooded
22 October: the heaviest rain fell over Jayanagar, Lalbagh, Halasuru, Indiranagar, MG Road, Sampangiramanagar and Mysuru Road. KR Market, Shantinagar, Vidhana Soudha, Rajajinagar and Malleshwaram had lighter spells. Roads flooded, the evening commute slowed, and two-wheeler riders sheltered under flyovers.
Earlier in October: roads, flyovers and underpasses flooded on 1 October, and Minister Krishna Byre Gowda ordered emergency preparedness steps. After heavy evening rain on 5 October, the Sivananda Circle railway underpass was among the worst-hit spots.
Commute, travel and school tips for this week
Commuting in the city
- Leave earlier in the afternoon if you can. The heaviest spells have arrived in the evening, so a 5–6 PM start is when you're most likely to get stuck.
- Avoid underpasses during a downpour. Sivananda Circle has flooded before. Water in an underpass is often deeper than it looks.
- Two-wheeler riders: shelter under a solid structure, not a tree, when there's lightning. Don't ride through moving water.
- Check traffic before you leave. Bengaluru Traffic Police post diversions and waterlogging updates on their official social media accounts.
Travelling in or out of Bengaluru
- If you're driving back from Mysuru, Mandya or Chamarajanagar after Dasara, try to travel in the morning. Those districts expect heavy thundershowers in places.
- On the coast and in the Malnad ghats, heavy rain can make hill roads slippery and cut visibility. Check the local district bulletin before you drive.
Are schools closed?
As of 24 October we found no reports of school holidays in Bengaluru or other Karnataka districts because of the rain. Rain holidays are usually announced by the district administration. Wait for an official order from the deputy commissioner's office or your school, and ignore forwarded messages. For comparison, here's how Chennai handled school holidays during heavy rain.
