Not yet. As of 4:30 PM IST on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, the Chennai district administration has not declared a rain holiday for schools on Thursday, 22 October. Wednesday's closure was for that day only. Unless the Collector issues a new order this evening or early tomorrow morning, plan for schools in Chennai to open as usual.
Two Tamil Nadu districts do have a planned local holiday tomorrow, and neither is because of rain. Thiruvarur is closed for the Muthupettai Dargah festival and Thanjavur for Sadhaya Vizha. The rest of this update covers each district, what the weather office expects over the next five days, and how to confirm a late order before you send your child out.

Tomorrow school holiday in Chennai: status for Thursday, 22 October
Heavy rain started on Tuesday evening, 20 October, and kept going overnight. By Wednesday morning, collectors in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu and Ranipet had closed schools for the day. An IANS report named S. Malathi Helen as the Chennai Collector who signed the order. The Tiruvallur order came from Collector Kavitha. Careers360, citing The Hindu, reported that Ranipet issued "a similar order".
These orders did not cover Thursday. IANS reports that each district has to issue a fresh order to extend a closure, and only after it reviews overnight rainfall and the latest forecast. So whether Chennai gets a holiday tomorrow depends on how much rain falls tonight.
In short:
- Chennai: no holiday announced for 22 October yet.
- Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Ranipet: no extension announced yet.
- Thiruvarur and Thanjavur: local holiday on 22 October for festivals, not for rain. Tamil news sites have reported both, but we have not seen the official orders.

IMD rain alert for Chennai: what the forecast says
The northeast monsoon is getting stronger over Tamil Nadu, and the next few days look wet. Here is what the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) Chennai and other weather sources are saying:
- Low-pressure area now: In its 21 October bulletin, RMC Chennai said a low-pressure area was expected to form over the southwest Bay of Bengal, near the Tamil Nadu coast, within 24 hours.
- Chennai for the next three days: moderate rain is likely, with heavy to very heavy rain possible at isolated places in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Villupuram, the delta districts, Ramanathapuram, Puducherry and Karaikal.
- Around 25 October: very heavy rain is possible in Chennai.
- How long it lasts: rain across Tamil Nadu is likely to continue until about 26 October.
- Wind: gusts of 40 to 50 km/h are expected.
- South Tamil Nadu: Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari were under an orange alert on 21 October, with up to 20 cm of rain possible across 21 and 22 October.
On 19 October, IMD placed 17 districts, including Chennai, under a yellow alert valid until 23 October. Media reports have since disagreed on the alert colour. At least one 21 October report put Chennai, Tiruvallur and Chengalpattu on orange. For the colour that applies to your district, check the latest RMC Chennai bulletin directly. We have more on how the alert levels work in our guide to Chennai's IMD red alerts and extremely heavy rain warnings.
Will the low around 23 October become a cyclone?
A second low-pressure system may form around 23 October. Weather official V.R. Durai told Live Chennai it could strengthen into a cyclone. Later bulletins have not confirmed that. A low has to pass through the depression and deep depression stages before it becomes a cyclone, and many systems never get that far. Our explainer on why a deep depression doesn't always become a cyclone covers how this works.
Pradeep John of the Tamil Nadu El Niño expert group expects the rain to ease during the day, with moderate to heavy spells at night and in the early morning. That timing is important for school decisions. Heavy rain before dawn is usually what leads to a last-minute closure.
Looking further ahead, forecasters say the monsoon could last until January. They expect November to be wetter than October, with more lows forming. That means more rain holidays are likely this season, even if tomorrow stays a working day.
Who announces a rain holiday, and when?
In Tamil Nadu, the District Collector decides whether schools close for rain. The order is made district by district, after the Collector looks at overnight rainfall, waterlogging reports and the IMD/RMC forecast. A closure in Chennai does not apply in Tiruvallur or Chengalpattu, and the reverse is also true.
Orders usually come out at one of two times:
- The evening before (often 6 PM to 10 PM), when the forecast already looks severe.
- Early morning (often 5 AM to 7 AM), when the rain has been heavier overnight than expected.
Many districts announced Wednesday's closure only on the morning itself. Don't take "no announcement by bedtime" as a final answer. Check again before school.
Does the holiday cover colleges, private and CBSE schools?
The 21 October orders were reported as covering schools only. Colleges, universities and coaching centres were not included, and they follow their own notices.
- Government and aided schools: covered by the Collector's order.
- Private, CBSE, ICSE and other board schools: these usually follow the district order when it is worded as "all schools". Some schools send their own SMS or WhatsApp message, so watch for one.
- Colleges and universities: not covered unless the order names them. Check your college portal or class group.
- Offices and banks: a school rain holiday does not close offices or banks. Our October–November 2026 bank holiday list shows the scheduled closures.
What happens to exams and tests on a rain holiday?
When a rain holiday is declared, internal school tests are usually postponed rather than cancelled. CareerIndia reports that schools generally share a revised timetable within 24 to 48 hours. Board exams, university exams and competitive or recruitment exams run on their own schedules, and the conducting body announces any change. Unless it says otherwise, assume your exam is going ahead.
Post-Dussehra reopening: Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh
Some of tomorrow's searches come from families getting ready for the end of the Dussehra break, so here is what we know.
- Tamil Nadu: one school-calendar blog (School Dekho) lists 22 October as the reopening day after the Dussehra break. It is not an official government notice. In practice, schools in districts that closed for rain on 21 October will open on Thursday unless the Collector extends the closure. Thiruvarur and Thanjavur stay shut on 22 October for their local festivals.
- Telangana and Andhra Pradesh: we have not seen an official government order confirming the post-Dasara reopening date, so we are not quoting one here. Check the state School Education Department's official circular, or the message from your school, before you rely on any date. We will add the confirmed dates when they are published.
How to check for a Chennai school holiday before leaving home
These steps work for every rain alert this monsoon, not only tomorrow's:
- Check the District Collector's official X (Twitter) account for Chennai, or for your own district. Orders are usually posted there first.
- Look for Tamil Nadu government announcements, which the major news outlets also carry within minutes.
- Read your school's SMS or WhatsApp group. Most schools forward the Collector's order and add their own instructions.
- Don't trust forwarded screenshots without a date. Old orders, including a widely shared 2024 notice about a 16 October closure, still circulate every year.
- Check again between 6 AM and 7 AM if it rained heavily overnight.

On the ground in Chennai
The Greater Chennai Corporation gave out 6,000 food packets in Virugambakkam on 21 October. It is also carrying out ₹21.8 crore of road patchwork across zones 1 to 15. Even if schools open tomorrow, expect waterlogged stretches and slow traffic in the morning, particularly if there is a heavy spell before dawn. Leave earlier than usual, and keep children away from open drains and flooded roads.
What parents should do tonight
- Pack school bags as usual. As things stand, Thursday is a working day in Chennai.
- Keep raincoats or umbrellas and a spare set of socks ready.
- Turn on notifications for your school group and the Collector's X account.
- Check again first thing in the morning before the school van or bus arrives.
- If you live in Thiruvarur or Thanjavur, schools are closed tomorrow for the local holiday. Note the make-up working days: Saturday 24 October for Thiruvarur and Saturday 14 November for Thanjavur.
We will update this page as soon as any district issues an order for 22 October or for the days after it. For more trending news and live updates, visit the KyunTrend homepage.
