Gold price calculator: what you'll actually pay
Buying gold this Dhanteras (Fri 6 Nov)? The rate on the board is only the start. Add making charges and 3% GST to see the real bill. You enter today's rate, because we don't guess live prices.
01 GST
Is GST 3% on everything, or 5% on making?
When you buy finished jewellery from a shop, GST is 3% on the total, which is gold plus making. CBIC's official GST FAQ for the gems and jewellery sector says: "GST is payable at the rate of 3% of the total transaction value of jewellery, whether the making charge is shown separately or not." That's what this calculator uses.
You may have read that making charges attract 5%. Under the same FAQ, 5% applies to job work: when a registered job worker makes jewellery from gold a manufacturer supplies, the job worker charges 5% on the job charges only. That's a business-to-business rate. If you take your own old gold to a jeweller to be remade, ask how they'll bill it. The 3% rate on gold wasn't changed in the September 2025 GST rate rationalisation (Mint).
02 Hallmark
Check the hallmark and HUID in 60 seconds
Since 1 April 2023, BIS-registered jewellers can only sell gold jewellery with an HUID hallmark (PIB). Look for three marks on the piece:
- The BIS logo (a triangle).
- Purity in carats and fineness, e.g. 22K916 for 22 carat, or 18K750.
- A 6-character alphanumeric HUID (Hallmark Unique ID), unique to that piece.
To verify: install the BIS Care app, tap "Verify HUID" and enter the code. It should show the jeweller's details, the article type and the purity. If anything doesn't match, don't pay. You can also get hallmarked jewellery tested at any BIS-recognised assaying and hallmarking centre for ₹200 (PIB, 2023).
