Tibet Earthquake Today: Magnitude 7.0 Quake Hits Nagqu. Casualties, Epicentre and Was It Felt in India?

A shallow magnitude 7.0 earthquake hit Baqên County in northern Tibet at about 8:03 pm IST on 22 October 2026. At least 16 people have died and 32 are injured. Here is the epicentre, how far it is from India, the aftershock risk and the official sources to follow.

On Thursday, 22 October 2026, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck northern Tibet at 22:33 China time, which is about 8:03 pm IST. The epicentre was in Baqên County, Nagqu, near the Qinghai border. At least 16 people have died, 32 are injured and at least 339 houses have collapsed. As of our last check, no official Indian agency or Indian media outlet has reported shaking in India.

Search interest in the Tibet earthquake is high because the numbers kept changing overnight. The first reports said nobody had been hurt. Later reports put the death toll in double digits. Below is the latest verified picture, the India angle that wire copy leaves out, and the official pages you can follow for updates.

Figures last checked: 23 October 2026. The death toll is still changing. Any page that says "no casualties" is out of date.

Where was the epicentre?

The quake was centred in Baqên County, which comes under Nagqu city in northern Tibet, close to the border with Qinghai province. This is high-altitude, very thinly populated grassland and mountains. It is not the Himalayan belt along the Nepal border.

  • From Nagqu city: about 183 km east-northeast, per USGS. Some outlets say 191 km.
  • From Lhasa: Nagqu city is about 300 km north of Lhasa. The epicentre is further away, roughly 400 km, which explains why some Indian sites give that figure.
  • Fault type: USGS says this was a normal-faulting quake, where the crust is pulled apart rather than pushed together. It estimates the rupture at about 50 km by 20 km.
  • Strongest shaking: MMI VIII ("severe") near the epicentre.

Tibet earthquake death toll and damage: the latest numbers

The casualty figures rose quickly through the night. Here is how they changed:

  1. First reports (including the Washington Post and several Indian sites) said there were no casualties or damage.
  2. Next, local reports mentioned two people injured and cracked houses.
  3. Then AP and Xinhua reported at least 16 dead, 32 injured and 339 houses collapsed.
  4. Latest: Wikipedia, citing the Chinese portal NetEase, shows 18–19 or more dead. This has not yet been matched by an official national figure.

Of the 32 injured, 11 are in serious condition and 21 have minor injuries. Reported damage includes:

  • Collapsed homes: at least 339, mostly traditional low-rise rural houses.
  • Ground cracks and damaged walls in Mărú Township.
  • National Highway 317 blocked: rockfalls closed part of this key road into eastern Tibet, and one vehicle was hit.

USGS's early outlook says significant damage and casualties are possible, but the total should stay limited because so few people live in the area. Expect the final death toll to differ from today's figure as rescuers reach remote villages.

Rescue response

The China Earthquake Administration activated a Level II emergency response. The Nagqu battalion of the Lhasa Fire and Rescue unit sent a seven-member advance team with life-detection equipment, and more rescue teams are travelling to the epicentre. Blocked roads, freezing late-October nights and altitudes above 4,500 metres make the work slow.

Was the Tibet earthquake felt in India, Nepal or Sikkim?

Short answer: there is no confirmed report of shaking in India. As of our last check, the National Center for Seismology (NCS) and Indian media had not reported tremors in Sikkim, Ladakh, Arunachal Pradesh or anywhere else in north-east India. We also found no reports from Nepal or Bhutan.

The reason is distance. The epicentre is in north-eastern Tibet, far from the Himalayan border. Our approximate straight-line estimates are:

PlaceApprox. distance from epicentre
Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh~550–600 km
Thimphu, Bhutan~650–700 km
Gangtok, Sikkim~750 km
Kathmandu, Nepal~950 km
Leh, Ladakh~1,500 km

These are our own rough calculations from the published coordinates, not official figures.

At these distances, a magnitude 7.0 quake may produce faint swaying on the upper floors of tall buildings, but noticeable shaking is unlikely. If you felt something on Thursday evening, check the NCS website for a separate local tremor at the same time before linking it to Tibet. Be careful with WhatsApp forwards claiming "strong tremors in Delhi/Guwahati". Our explainer on the fake "Cyclone Arnab" alerts shows how quickly these rumours spread.

How this compares with the January 2025 Tibet earthquake

Many results for "Tibet earthquake" and "तिब्बत भूकंप" still point to the January 2025 quake. These are two different events:

22 Oct 2026 (Nagqu)7 Jan 2025 (Dingri/Tingri)
Magnitude7.07.1 (USGS), 6.8 (China)
LocationBaqên County, northern Tibet, near QinghaiShigatse, southern Tibet, near the Nepal border
DeathsAt least 16 (rising)126
Injured32188+
Felt in Nepal/India?No confirmed reportsYes. Felt in Kathmandu and parts of north India

The 2025 quake was felt widely in India because it was close to the Everest region and the Nepal border. The October 2026 quake hit a much more remote area hundreds of kilometres further from India.

Aftershocks: what to expect next

The biggest aftershock so far was M5.2, about 45 minutes after the main quake. More aftershocks are expected over the coming days and weeks. They will become smaller and less frequent over time, but an occasional M5-plus shock is still possible.

USGS also warned of a landslide risk on the steep slopes around the epicentre. That matters for highways such as NH 317, where rockfalls have already happened. Indian travellers do not need to take any action, because the affected zone is deep inside China and far from routes Indians normally use.

Why does Tibet get so many earthquakes?

The Indian plate is pushing north into the Eurasian plate by a few centimetres every year. That collision raised the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau, and it stores huge stress in the crust.

Not all of that stress is released through compression. The high plateau is also stretching from east to west, which creates normal faults like the one that ruptured on Thursday. Recent examples:

  • Damxung, 1952 and 2008: major quakes north of Lhasa.
  • June 2024: an M5.9 near Nagqu.
  • January 2025: the M7.1 Dingri quake (126 dead).
  • May 2025: an M5.7 in Tibet.

The same plate collision makes India's own Himalayan states, from Ladakh to Arunachal, high-risk seismic zones. The Ladakh–China border is also often in the news for other reasons, as our piece on Ladakh's 28 renamed places and China's objection explains.

Quick safety refresher for people in Himalayan states

This quake was not a threat to India, but readers in Sikkim, Uttarakhand, Himachal, Ladakh and the north-east live in high-risk zones. NDMA's basic advice:

  • Drop, cover, hold on: get under a sturdy table and stay away from windows and heavy shelves.
  • Stay indoors while it shakes: most injuries happen when people run outside and are hit by falling debris.
  • If you are outdoors, move away from buildings, power lines and steep slopes.
  • Keep an emergency kit: water, torch, power bank, basic medicines and copies of ID.

Frequently asked questions

What time did the Tibet earthquake happen in IST?

The quake struck at 22:33 China Standard Time on Thursday, 22 October 2026. That is 14:33 UTC, or about 8:03 pm Indian Standard Time. China is two and a half hours ahead of India, so subtract 2:30 from the Chinese time to get IST. The largest aftershock, an M5.2, followed roughly 45 minutes later, at around 8:50 pm IST.

How many people died in the Tibet earthquake?

AP and Xinhua report at least 16 deaths, and some Chinese outlets cited on Wikipedia put the toll at 18 to 19. The Nagqu media office says 32 people are injured, 11 of them seriously. At least 339 houses have collapsed. Rescuers are still reaching remote villages, so the numbers may change. Any report saying there were no casualties is out of date.

Was the Tibet earthquake felt in Delhi, Sikkim or north-east India?

As of 23 October 2026, neither India's National Center for Seismology nor Indian media had confirmed any tremors in India. The epicentre in Baqên County is roughly 550 to 750 km from the nearest Indian towns, such as Tawang and Gangtok, so strong shaking was unlikely. The January 2025 Tibet quake, by contrast, was close to Nepal and was widely felt.

Will there be more aftershocks after the Tibet earthquake?

Yes. Aftershocks are normal after a magnitude 7.0 quake. The largest so far was an M5.2 about 45 minutes after the main shock. Smaller aftershocks will continue for days or weeks, getting less frequent over time. USGS has also warned of landslides on the steep terrain, and rockfalls have already blocked parts of National Highway 317.

Is this the same as the January 2025 Tibet earthquake?

No. The 7 January 2025 quake hit Dingri (Tingri) in Shigatse, near the Nepal border. It measured M7.1 on the USGS scale, killed 126 people and was felt in Nepal and north India. The 22 October 2026 quake hit Baqên County in Nagqu, northern Tibet, much further from India. Many older search results still describe the 2025 event.

Was there a tsunami warning after the Tibet earthquake?

No. The epicentre is on the Tibetan Plateau, more than 1,000 km from any ocean, so a tsunami was not possible and no warning was issued. The main secondary hazards are aftershocks, landslides and rockfalls in the mountains around Nagqu, plus freezing temperatures that put people who lost their homes at risk.
