Naman Dhir is a 26-year-old all-rounder from Punjab who bats right-handed and bowls off-spin. What Naman Dhir did in the IND vs NZ 1st T20I
This section is your IND vs NZ T20 highlights in one place, with the finish told from Dhir's side.
New Zealand post 225/4
New Zealand batted first and made 225/4 in 20 overs. Glenn Phillips top-scored with 82 not out off 40 balls (8 fours, 3 sixes). Finn Allen made 45 off 24, Bevon Jacobs 31 off 16 and Daryl Mitchell 28. Mayank Yadav, Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel took one wicket each, and one report says every Indian bowler went for more than 40 runs.
Samson's fast start, then a wobble
Sanju Samson reached fifty in 23 balls and made 67 off 33 (8 fours, 4 sixes). He and Abhishek Sharma (29 off 12, three sixes) put on 93 for the first wicket, and India were 94/1 after the powerplay.
Then the spinners pulled it back. Michael Bracewell and Mitchell Santner took two wickets each. Tilak Varma made 6, Ishan Kishan made 1, and India slipped to 122/4.
Dhir finishes it
Captain Shreyas Iyer (42 off 28) and Axar Patel (24 off 14) kept India in the chase. When Iyer was out, India still needed 16 off 11 balls. Dhir got them with room to spare and finished on 42 not out off 15 balls, with 5 fours and 2 sixes, at a strike rate of 280. The winning hit was a top-edged six over the wicketkeeper off Matt Henry.
India made 230/6 in 19.4 overs and won by 4 wickets with two balls to spare. They lead the five-match series 1-0.
Why the chase matters
- According to NewsX, 226 is India's highest successful chase in men's T20Is. The previous best was 209.
- It is the second-highest successful T20I chase against New Zealand. Australia's 244 in Auckland in 2018 is still the highest.
Clearing up the conflicting reports
- Player of the Match: reports disagree. India.com names Dhir and NewsX names Samson. Check ESPNcricinfo or the BCCI's official site for the final answer.
- Winning margin: a few reports say "six wickets". The real margin is four wickets, which matches India's 230/6.
- Dhir's score: one live widget showed 36* off 14, which was probably taken before the final balls. Most match reports have 42* off 15.
Naman Dhir's background: Ambala to Punjab
Dhir was born in Ambala, Haryana, on 31 December 1999. He plays his state cricket for Punjab and has been part of their senior set-up since 2022.
His breakout domestic season was 2023–24. That year Punjab won the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, India's national T20 competition, and Dhir also scored two Ranji Trophy hundreds. That combination of white-ball hitting and red-ball centuries is what made scouts take notice.
The 173 that made headlines
On 8 September 2026 he scored 173 off 64 balls for Amritsar Soormas against Mohali Kings in the Sher-e-Punjab T20 league. Reports called it the highest score in any Indian domestic T20 competition. He finished the tournament with 655 runs at a strike rate of 217.6. That was only weeks before his India call-up, so selectors had very recent proof of his form.
Naman Dhir's IPL record with Mumbai Indians
Mumbai Indians signed Dhir for his ₹20 lakh base price ahead of IPL 2024. He did enough in his first season that MI used a right-to-match card to keep him for ₹5.25 crore at the 2025 auction. That's more than 25 times his original fee.
In IPL 2026 he scored 318 runs in 14 matches at an average of 26.50 and a strike rate of 147.22. MI sometimes moved him up to No. 3, which shows how much they trusted him against the new ball as well as at the death. If you follow MI's leadership debate, our explainer on the Rohit Sharma IPL 2027 captaincy report covers the background.
How Naman Dhir got into India's squad
He made it into the national side fast. Here is the timeline:
- 27 September 2026: ODI debut vs West Indies. Wikipedia lists it, with cap number 264. We haven't been able to confirm the date or cap number in a news report yet.
- Early October: called into the T20I squad to replace Washington Sundar. The team management told him he would bat at No. 6 or 7 and be the fifth or sixth bowling option.
- 2 October: press conference in New Chandigarh. He told the ICC that Ravindra Jadeja had given him bowling plans and that he wanted to improve his off-spin.
- T20I debut in Lucknow vs West Indies: 3 wickets in an 8-wicket win.
- 3rd T20I in Indore: 2/39. That gave him five wickets in the series, the most by an Indian bowler after three games.
- 17 October, Bengaluru: 24* off 6 balls (three sixes, one four) before rain washed out the 5th T20I. The series finished 2-2.
- 22 October, Christchurch: the match-winning 42* off 15 against New Zealand.
The selection process is a story of its own. Our piece on Pragyan Ojha and the new selection committee explains who is picking India's squads now.
Batter or bowler? Naman Dhir's role in the team
He does both, but batting comes first. India uses him as:
- A finisher at No. 6 or 7. He scored 24* off 6 in Bengaluru and 42* off 15 in Christchurch. His job is to clear the boundary straight away, not to build an innings.
- A part-time off-spinner. He's the fifth or sixth bowler. Against West Indies he was the real deal, taking five wickets in the series.
Khel Now compares him to England's Will Jacks, a top-order hitter who can bowl a few overs of off-spin and give the captain an extra option. With Washington Sundar unavailable, that flexibility is exactly why India picked him.

The Christchurch finish just put him in front of a much bigger audience. If India keep him at No. 6 or 7 with a few overs of off-spin, expect his name to keep trending through this series.
