Claude Duet is a new standalone app from Anthropic where Claude acts as a proactive AI agent. It runs on its own cloud computer, checks your connected apps, sends you a morning brief and finishes tasks while your phone is off. It launched as a research preview on 21 October 2026. For now it's open only to Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the US, through a waitlist, so you can't use Claude Duet in India yet.
It's trending because it's the third "always-on" AI agent to launch in about six weeks, after Meta's Muse and OpenAI's Dots. Below we cover what it actually does, how it compares with those two, what it costs, and the privacy settings to check before you connect your email or payment accounts.
Why Claude Duet is trending (the "kyun trend" answer)
On Wednesday, 21 October 2026, Anthropic announced the research preview of Claude Duet on its @claudeai account on X. CNBC, MacRumors, 9to5Mac, 9to5Google, US News/Reuters and Unite.ai all covered it within hours.
The timing is a big part of the story. Big AI companies are racing to build agents that work in the background instead of waiting for you to type:
- 8 September 2026: Meta launched Muse. About 10 days later it was the #1 free app on Apple's App Store.
- 29 September 2026: OpenAI announced Dots at DevDay. It runs on GPT-6 Astra and connects to more than 4,000 apps.
- 21 October 2026: Anthropic released Claude Duet, which runs on Claude Opus 5.5 and offers 6,000+ connectors and plugins.
Indian users are searching too. According to Anthropic's figures, India is Claude's second-largest market, with 5.8% of usage. Many people here want to know whether they can get it.
What is Claude Duet and how is it different from regular Claude?
Regular Claude waits for you to open a chat. Claude Duet messages you first. You give it work by text or voice message, and it keeps going after you leave. It works on its own cloud computer with a browser, so your phone or laptop doesn't need to stay on.
A typical day with Duet
- Morning brief: Duet sends a summary of what needs your attention, with suggested next steps already drafted.
- Background check-ins: Every few hours it checks your connected apps and messages you only when something matters.
- Approval requests: Before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document or deletes a file, it asks you first.
- Finished work: Completed files show up in a dedicated tab, ready to review.
The two tabs you'll use
- Tasks: tracks ongoing work. Only you can mark a task as done, so Duet can't close something on its own.
- Make: stores finished output such as briefs, decks, docs, spreadsheets, financial models and dashboards.
Duet uses your existing Claude account, so your memory, skills and connectors carry over. It can also search your past chats, and everything stays in one message thread.
Is it the same as Claude Cowork's scheduled tasks?
The two overlap, but they aren't the same. Duet is built around proactive briefs and check-ins and has its own app, separate from the main Claude app. Scheduled tasks are something you set up yourself. Duet's goal is to notice what needs doing before you ask.
What can Claude Duet actually do for you?
Anthropic is aiming Duet at professionals and small-business owners. The examples it gives are practical office work:
- Finding unpaid Stripe invoices and drafting payment reminders
- Preparing payroll for you to review
- Getting contracts ready to sign (via Docusign)
- Scheduling meetings across calendars
- Building decks, docs, sheets and financial models
Connectors: More than 6,000 connectors and plugins, including Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Slack, Notion, Microsoft 365, Stripe, Shopify, QuickBooks, Docusign, HubSpot, Gusto, Canva, Ramp, LinkedIn and 1Password. If a site has no connector, Duet uses its cloud browser instead.
Shopping: Duet can buy things through Link, Stripe's wallet, which pays with a virtual card so your real card number isn't shared. It also supports Shop Pay. Every purchase needs your approval.
What it's weaker at: Anthropic itself says personal errands, like booking tickets, are "not quite as strong" yet. Duet is a work tool more than a personal concierge.
Claude Duet vs Meta Muse vs OpenAI Dots
Most launch coverage mentions the competitors without comparing them. Here's what is publicly known about each. Where we don't have a confirmed detail, we say so rather than guess.
| Feature | Claude Duet (Anthropic) | OpenAI Dots | Meta Muse |
|---|---|---|---|
| Launch date | 21 Oct 2026 (research preview) | 29 Sep 2026 (DevDay) | 8 Sep 2026 |
| Underlying model | Claude Opus 5.5 | GPT-6 Astra | Not confirmed in our sources |
| App connections | 6,000+ connectors and plugins, plus a cloud browser | 4,000+ apps | Not confirmed in our sources |
| Standout point | Morning brief, works on its own cloud computer, asks before acting | Large app ecosystem tied to ChatGPT | Reached #1 free app on Apple's chart ~10 days after launch |
| Access | Waitlist, US Pro and Max subscribers only | Check OpenAI's official page | Check Meta's official page |
| Best suited to | Professionals and small businesses | Broad ChatGPT user base | Mass-market consumers |
Which one is better?
There's no clear winner yet, since all three are only weeks old. Duet's strengths are the most connectors (6,000+), its focus on business workflows such as invoices, payroll and contracts, and strict built-in limits on what it may do with money. Muse has the strongest consumer pull, judging by its App Store ranking. Dots benefits from OpenAI's huge ChatGPT audience. If you already pay for Claude and run a small business, Duet is the most natural fit. For personal errands, Anthropic itself says Duet isn't the strongest option yet.
Claude Duet pricing: does it cost extra?
No, there's no extra charge. Duet comes with the Claude Pro and Max plans. There is a catch, though:
- Duet shares your plan's usage limits.
- Its background check-ins count against those limits, so Anthropic warns you may hit them "sooner than with chat alone."
- Large jobs like slide decks and financial models use up more of your allowance.
- It isn't available on Team or Enterprise plans yet. Anthropic says it plans to expand.
Platforms: Duet has its own iOS and Android apps and also works on claude.ai on the web.
Can you use Claude Duet in India?
Not yet. Access is US-only for now, and Anthropic hasn't given any timeline for a launch outside the US, including India.
Indian users do already have local pricing for the Claude plans that Duet would need. Anthropic introduced rupee pricing on 13 July 2026:
| Plan | India price | Includes Duet? |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Pro | About ₹2,000/month (billed annually) | Not in India yet (US-only preview) |
| Claude Max | From ₹11,999/month | Not in India yet (US-only preview) |
Our advice: Don't upgrade to Pro or Max just for Duet right now. Even in the US, a paid plan doesn't guarantee a spot. Also be careful with anyone online selling "Claude Duet invites" or APK files. Invites are sent by email from Anthropic, and unofficial downloads are a common way scammers steal accounts. If you lose money to a scam like this, here's how to report it on the 1930 cyber fraud helpline.
How to join the Claude Duet waitlist (for eligible users)
- Make sure you have an active Claude Pro or Max subscription on a US account.
- Go to the official Claude Duet product page on claude.com and select the waitlist link.
- Sign in with the Claude account you want to use, because your memory, skills and connectors carry over from it.
- Watch your email. Invites go out in waves.
- Once you're in, install the separate Duet app on iOS or Android, or use it on claude.ai.
- Connect apps one at a time. One sensible approach is to start with a test email account and dummy data before connecting your real inbox or Stripe.
Privacy and safety: what to check before you connect your accounts
Letting an AI agent into your email, calendar and payment accounts is a big step. Here is what Anthropic says it has built in, and where the gaps are.
Built-in protections
- Approval first: Duet asks before sending messages, making payments, signing documents or deleting files.
- Hard limits: It can never trade securities or move money between accounts, even if you approve it.
- No password access: Duet never sees your passwords or login tokens.
- Sensitive-data classifier: A new filter blocks the most sensitive data, such as card numbers and government ID numbers. Health and financial details are shared only when you explicitly ask.
- Security testing: Internal red teams, an outside penetration-testing firm and Anthropic's HackerOne bug bounty programme. Anthropic says it will publish more on its safety approach "in the coming days."
Known weak spots
- It can "misread a thread or miscalibrate what's urgent."
- Because it checks in every few hours, it can miss things that arrive between check-ins. Limited permissions or a narrow connector scope can also cause misses.
- You can't watch its browser while it works during the preview.
- Your data is processed in the cloud, not on your device.
A quick checklist
- Give each connector the narrowest permissions it needs.
- Review every approval request carefully, especially payments and outgoing emails.
- Don't treat it as a real-time alert system for anything urgent.
- Check your plan usage regularly so background check-ins don't use up your limit.
What's coming next
Anthropic has mentioned two upcoming features: a visual Shopify storefront editor and 1Password-based sign-in to websites. Early testers it has named include Anthropic staff Boris Cherny and Karan Ahuja, Pro Homes owner Jess Provencher, and the restaurant business Shahs of Kabob, which has about 110 employees. That fits Duet's small-business focus.
For Indian readers, the main thing to watch is whether Anthropic adds India to the rollout, given that India is already its second-largest market. As agents like Duet take over more routine office work, the debate over AI and jobs is getting louder. Read our take on the IMF's AI jobs warning for India.
